Margherita's sister and brothers all fenced when they were young and her brother Francisco served as an international fencing referee.


Granbassi won her first gold medal in 2004 at the World Championships in New York in Team Foil

In 2006 Margherita won her first individual gold medal at the World Championships in Turin.  Granbassi also earned a silver medal in Team Foil in Turin.


At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Margherita won two bronze medals, one in Team Foil and one in the individual Foil where she defeated her teammate from Italy Giovanna Trillini.
